Bill Peterson

Bill Peterson,

Bill has worked as a journalist, newspaper publisher and executive coach. Specializing in communications strategy, he maps out how clear and consistent messaging supports effective issues management.

Bill began life as a newspaper reporter and during his journalism career founded Saskatchewan Free Press community newspapers, was editor and publisher of The StarPhoenix and served as president and publisher of Southam Group newspapers including the Prince George Citizen and Kingston Whig-Standard. Bill also chaired Southam’s national Business Re-engineering and Technology Task Force. He worked as Director of Communications for Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation, predecessor of Cameco. Bill provided executive coaching during his time as Chair of the Saskatoon Chapter of The Executive Committee (TEC), an international organization of business owners and chief executive officers.

After considerable harassment for being a high school graduate, Bill retreated to night school and graduated in business administration from the University of Saskatchewan. He attended the University of Toronto as a Southam Journalism Fellow and City University in London, England as a Commonwealth Journalism Fellow. He was a sessional lecturer at the University of Regina’s School of Journalism and Communications and chaired the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College’s Native Journalism Development Program. Bill served as founding Chair of the Board of Governors of the Toronto-based National Newspaper Awards, and as Director of the Canadian Daily Newspaper Publishers Association.

A member of the Canadian Institute of Corporate Directors, Bill sits on a variety of boards including the Saskatchewan Advisory Board of GrowthWorks, a venture capital company. He is involved in several community organizations including United Way of Saskatoon, Habitat For Humanity, Meewasin Valley Authority, Persephone Theatre and Mendel Art Gallery.

Bill is surrounded by Jack Russell terriers.
